Start with the season, not the villa
Tropical coasts have rhythms — dry seasons and green seasons, calmer and choppier months. Decide when you can travel first, then look at which destinations are at their best at that time of year. You will enjoy a modest villa in the perfect season far more than a spectacular one in the rain.
Be honest about what your group needs
Count real beds, not just bedrooms. Check whether bathrooms are shared, whether every room is air-conditioned and how far the beach really is. If you are travelling with small children or older relatives, stairs, pool fencing and step-free access matter more than a view.
Read the policies before you fall in love
Look at minimum stays, the deposit and payment schedule, and the cancellation terms before you reach the checkout page. A slightly higher nightly rate with flexible cancellation is often the better value.
Plan only the first day
Arrange your transfer, buy a few groceries for breakfast and leave the rest open. The best beach days are rarely the ones on a spreadsheet.
