How to Find the Perfect Sunset Spot

West-facing beaches, a little height and good timing — how to find a sunset worth remembering.

Face west (and check the season)

It sounds obvious, but the sun’s setting point moves along the horizon through the year. A map app with a sun-path overlay will show you exactly where it will set on your dates.

Look for a little height

Clifftops, rooftop terraces and dunes give you a wider horizon and a view over the water’s reflections.

Arrive early, stay late

Be there thirty minutes before sunset to get a good spot, and stay twenty minutes after — the deepest colours often appear once the sun has gone.

Clouds are your friend

A completely clear sky can be beautiful but simple. Scattered high clouds catch the light and turn the whole sky orange and pink.
