Planning a Family-Friendly Beach Getaway

Calm water, shade and a flexible plan — what to look for when travelling to the beach with children.

Choose calm water

Sheltered bays and gently sloping beaches are best for little swimmers. Ask your hosts which beaches are calm and whether there are lifeguards.

Check the villa for safety

Look for pool fencing or pool covers, secure balconies and ground-floor bedrooms if you have toddlers. Ask whether a cot and high chair are provided.

Plan around the heat

Beach in the morning, shade and naps in the middle of the day, back out in the late afternoon. Children feel the sun faster than adults — rash vests and hats make a huge difference.

Keep it simple

Sandcastles, rock pools and a bucket can fill a whole morning. One small outing a day is plenty.
