A Beginner’s Guide to Snorkeling Safely

Everything a first-time snorkeler should know — from fitting your mask to reading the water and protecting the reef.

Get the gear right

A mask should seal gently against your face without the strap — press it on, breathe in through your nose and it should stay put. Tuck hair away from the seal. Fins should be snug but not painful.

Practise in shallow, calm water

Stand in waist-deep water, put your face in and breathe slowly through the snorkel. Once you’re relaxed, float face-down and kick gently from the hips.

Read the water before you go in

  • Check local conditions and ask about currents
  • Never snorkel alone — always go with a buddy
  • Stay within your swimming ability and close to shore unless with a guide
  • Wear a rash vest for sun protection and consider a flotation vest

Protect the reef

Never stand on, touch or kick coral — it’s a living animal and grows very slowly. Use reef-safe sunscreen, keep your fins up and give marine life plenty of space.

Know when to stop

If you feel tired, cold or anxious, head back. The reef will still be there tomorrow.
